DISTRIBUTION UK

BVI No 1 in 2003

by

Buena Vista International was the top distributor in the UK in 2003, with a 26.3% market share and a total gross of £218.3m according to figures released by Nielsen EDI.

Headed by the long-established executive Daniel Battsek, BVI UK had a fantastic year, thanks to Disney’s animated film Finding Nemo (the Number 1 title in the UK, with a £37.3m gross) and the unexpected hit, Pirates Of The Caribbean: The Curse Of The Black Pearl (£28,2m in 5th place at the B.O.). BVI's shrewd marketing campaign for the UK comedy Calendar Girls gained the film 10th position in the 2003 UK Top Ten, taking a total gross in ticket sales of £19.6m.

(£18.9m) were the three UK titles that made it into the local Top 10, dominated as usual by US fare.

The struggle for foreign language titles at the UK box office is very clear, as the biggest grossing foreign language film of 2003 was the Brazilian production City of God, coming in only at number 67, with a £2.4m gross. Good Bye, Lenin! [+see also:

was the most successful European title, and was the third biggest hit for a foreign language film (£1.1m) after the Bollywood production, Kal Ho Naa Ho.
