The reign of the Lords and Masters

- Anthony Minghella’s Cold Mountain only managed to transform 2 out of its 13 nominations into prizes, in a BAFTA award ceremony dominated by American productions

Peter Jackson’s The Lord Of The Rings: The Return Of The King and Peter Weir’s Master and Commander - The Far Side Of The World were the big winners at last night’s BAFTA ceremony, the British equivalent of the Oscars. The two American productions won four awards each, respectively for Best Film, Adapted Screenplay, Cinematography and Visual Effects for "Lords" and the Best Direction, Production Design, Costume Design and Sound for "Master".

was a favourite, with 13 nominations, it disappointingly only won two BAFTAs: Best Supporting Actress for Renée Zellweger and Best Music for Gabriel Yared. As expected Bill Murray won Best actor for Lost In Translation and his co-star in the film, 19-year-old Scarlett Johansson (also nominated for her role in The Girl With a Pearl Earring [+see also:

) was voted Best Actress.

There was a surprise winner in the category of Best Original Screenplay: Tom Mac Carthy’s The Station Agent beat the favorites Barbarian Invasions [+see also:

, Lost in Translation
and Finding Nemo and there was also a surprise win for the British director Michael Winterbottom, whose In This World won in the Best Film Not in the English Language catgeory.

Kevin MacDonald’s documentary, Touching the Void [+see also:

, which is doing really well at the UK box office, taking over 2.7m dollars in 9 weeks was a welcome winner of the Outstanding British Film of the Year.
