REGIONAL FUNDS Italy

The province of Lazio creates a fund for cinema

by

The creation of a regional fund by the Province of Lazio will be officially announced at a conference, on the 31st of March.
Alessandro Voglino, regional director for cultural activities, has already summed up the main purposes of the project : putting an end to risky investments on personal funds and encourage co-production (which is in fact what all the other regional funds in Europe do), dedicate part of the budget to script-development, as well as first and second works.

‘This fund, Voglino explains, was essentially created in order to defend national and European cinema against big American productions by compensating the cuts in the State’s budget with increased support from the regions, which have now become crucial operators. Our aim is to support production and distribution the way other major regions in Europe already do with great success. The obvious future prospect for us would be to create as soon as possible an international coordination of all regional funds to strengthen European cinema in general, train more professionals and create jobs, that is, make a real difference on a cultural and an economic level.’
