Set in Australia in the 1880s, scripted by musician Nick Cave and directed by John Hillcoat, the film opens in the middle of a frenzied gunfight between the police and a gang of outlaws. Charlie Burns (Guy Pearce) and his brother Mikey are captured by Captain Stanley (Ray Winstone). Along with their psychopathic brother Arthur (Danny Huston(), they are wanted for a brutal crime. Stanley makes Charlie a seemingly impossible proposition in an attempt to bring an end to the cycle of bloody violence. Emily Watson plays Stanley’s wife Martha Stanley; John Hurt, the bounty hunter Jellon Lamb and David Wenham, Eden Fletcher, the powerful local landowner. French DoP Benoit Delhomme was behind the beautiful photography.

The film was co-produced by Autonomous Film in the UK with O’ Jackie Production in Australia for Sure Fire Films, with support from the UK Film Council. After several screenings at recent festivals, such as Sundance and Berlin, Tartan Films released the film opened on 118 screens in the UK last Friday, to excellent reviews in the UK press (including in The Financial Times, The Guardian, The Daily Telegraph and Time Out).

The Proposition took the 11th spot in the box office totals, with a three-day gross of £205,595 (€300,000) and a per screen average of €2,500.
