With a cast still to be announced, Radford's Spanish-language film will be based on a novel by Juan Eslava Galán, who is also writing the screenplay. Set in the final months of the Spanish civil war, the film tells story of Juan Castro, a soldier who tries to save a donkey in the middle of the battle field. He looks at the animal as his potential personal contribution to the economic reconstruction of the country once the war is over.
With a budget of €15m, La Mula will be produced by Gheko Film Sur, a new production company run by Alejandra Frade and advertising director Bruce St Clair, in co-production with Sol Gatti Pascoal from The Bureau, the UK company that had previously backed major European co-production Merry Christmas. International sales will be handled by Capricon Entertainment Ltd.
