Several European films featured among the prizewinners at the 59th Locarno International Film Festival (August 2-12), whose renaissance driven by the artistic direction of Frédéric Maire, was highly appraised by the press.

(Miss) by young Swiss director Andrea Staka. No Swiss film has won a Golden Leopard since Alpine Fire by Fredi M. Murer in 1985. A German co-production, this first film also picked up the Youth Jury First Prize, as well as the Don Quixote Prize from the International Federation of Film Societies (IFFS). Another Swiss film, the documentary Zeit des Abschieds (lit. “Time of Farewell”) by Mehdi Sahebi, won the Critics' Week Prize.
