FUNDING Germany

FFA puts in place the new system announced by Neumann

by

Early next month, Christine Berg (current Director of the MSH regional funds) will rejoin the FFA (Filmförderungsanstalt – regulatory body for German cinema) in order to implement the new support framework for production that was announced by the Minister for Culture Bernd Neumann in mid-October (see news). The new system will be up and running as of January 1, 2007.

Beginning in December, the FFA will provide information to the competent bodies in each federal state so that producers are aware of the conditions that have to be met in order to qualify for reimbursement of 16-20% of production costs in Germany, in which 25% of the film’s budget must be spent. Another requirement is that the film be of cultural interest.

These allocation criteria – details of which can be found on the Ministry site (www.kulturstaatsminister.de) – are still awaiting European Commission approval.

The new support system, which will provide annual government funding of €60m over a three-year period, represents "a real opportunity for German cinema," according to FFA Director Peter Dinges.
