New Film Law postponed

by

The Spanish government, along with Minister of Culture Carmen Calvo, have decided to postpone the approval of the draft of the new Film Law until a more harmonious agreement is reached with the various film sectors that will be affected by it.

Despite a meeting held last week between the government and several local industry representatives (see news), the controversial draft is still up against opposition from local exhibitors and commercial broadcasters. In the meantime, several associations of actors and performing artists, who were kept out of the government's previous meetings, joined in the protest against the new law.

As president of AISGE, veteran actress Pilar Bardem stated that it is "sad and weird" that the new law ignores the demands of artists and other professionals: "We [actors] don’t ask for money, we have never done that before, this is for producers to do. We only ask for the recognition of our role, which is elementary in any audiovisual work".

New meetings are to scheduled soon.
