From 15 to 24 November 2002, Europe will celebrate its film heritage with CinEd@ys Europe 2002 an initiative of the European Commission and of its responsible for education, culture and audiovisual media.
CinEd@ys Europe 2002 is founded on two parallel and simultaneous events: European Film Heritage Week launched throughout Europe this year, and Netd@ys Europe a campaign promoting the use of new media in education and culture. Since 1997, this annual November event has mobilised over 30,000 schools and 500,000 young people and education and culture professionals around exchanges and multimedia projects. This year´s Netd@ys 2002 focuses on (moving) image education.
This initiative is organised with the patronage of the Spanish director Pedro Almodovar (see the Long live the European cinema article) and is supported by many European cinemas and film libraries.

CinEd@ys Europe 2002 objectives are threefold:
- To enable Europeans, especially young people, to (re)discover the treasures of European cinema, to deepen their understanding of their own cinematographic culture or simply their knowledge of Europe;
- To raise the profile of European Film Heritage in all its rich diversity;
- To introduce Europeans to the possibilities now created by digital imaging technologies.

In addition to programming classic European films in cinemas and across television networks, this initiative will allow young people to improve their knowledge of cinematic heritage and of `the image,´ through a programme of events carried out by schools, film institutes and other educational and cultural bodies.
European Cinema Heritage Week

European Cinema Heritage Week is in line with the European Union's Media Plus programme, which encourages the development, distribution and promotion of films.
«There is not just `one´ European cinema, but `several´. In establishing the Week, I hope that the European public will discover the great films which are the key elements of our cultural diversity, and that they will get into the habit of going to see European films. I also see this Week as an opportunity to underline the importance of conserving the archives and to undertake initiatives throughout Europe for education in the visual image» said Viviane Reding, Member of the European Commission, responsible for Education and Culture.

Events related to CinEd@ys Europe 2002 will be organised throughout Europe, with an opening event in Copenhagen on 14 November, under the patronage of the Danish Presidency, and, as the main event, a film and multimedia screening in Brussels on 23 November.

You can become a partner of CinEd@ys Europe 2002 by filling the entry form.

European Film Heritage week organised this year for the first time, will give the people of Europe, and in particular young people, the chance to discover or rediscover masterpieces of European cinema, to become more familiar with their film-making culture or quite simply to improve their knowledge of Europe.
The festivities include the following:
- in many towns in Europe, films from Europe´s heritage will be screened in cinemas, in particular the Europa Cinemas network, and by national and local television;
- festivals and activities related to cinema;
- cinemas and film libraries will organise special screenings for schools and young people, with explanatory talks;
- appearances by film stars in cinemas, on the Internet and on the radio to present film classics and talk about European cinema;
- a game based on European cinema, open to all via the Internet.

Netd@ys Europe

Since 1997, Netd@ys Europe has involved more than 500,000 young people and professionals from the fields of education and culture in the creation and exchange of multimedia. Watching, reading and doing are the three key words of Netd@ys Europe 2002, which focuses on the visual image.
Schools, training centres, youth associations, operas, museums, film libraries and cultural centres join forces to give young people the chance to chat with film experts on the Internet, to improve their knowledge of film heritage and their understanding of the visual image, and to use the Internet to play and to create and exchange material.
Netd@ys Europe 2002 are:

- a campaign to promote the new media in education and culture;
- competitions on cinema and the visual image;
- educational and creative activities: visits to multimedia centres, analysis of images and films, learning about video, computer graphics, photography, etc.;
- exchanges with stars and with professionals in audiovisual media and cinema;
- online collaboration on joint projects with other young people and other educational or cultural organisations;
- websites, chats and discussion forums on the subject of the visual image and cinema.
