Sixteen films vie for Golden Lions

by

Sixteen films produced between September 1, 2007 and August 31, 2008 will screen in official competition at the 33rd Polish Film Festival, which opens on Monday, September 15 in Gdynia.

As usual, the festival programme includes a special focus on a particular European country. This year’s edition devotes a day to Czech film.

The official competition – which will present 13 unreleased titles – also includes films lauded at other international festivals, such as Malgorzata Szumowska’s 33 Scenes from Life [+see also:

, which recently won acclaim at Venice.

The main competition screenings will give audiences the chance to discover new films by major directors. These include 0_1_0 by Piotr Lazarkiewicz (who died prematurely in June), Magdalena Piekorz’s Sleep, Petr Zelenka’s The Karamazovs, Dariusz Gajewski’s Mr. Kuka’s Lessons, Jerzy Skolimowski’s Four Nights With Anna [+see also:

and Krzysztof Zanussi’s Heart In Your Hand.

The official competition jury is this year presided by Robert Glinski.

Besides the Golden Lions awarded to winners in the official competition, the festival will also present prizes to independent film directors. The latter will be judged by a jury headed by Slawomir Fabicki.

Polish productions not included in official competition will screen in the New Polish Film Panorama.

Finally, the festival will offer documentary fans the opportunity to see films lauded at the 48th Krakow Film Festival, the largest Polish event dedicated to documentaries.
