Strong British, Irish presence in Globe nominations

The spectacular run for British films continued with the announcement of the Golden Globe Awards nominations, while Irish actors were recognised in the acting categories.

British directors Danny Boyle, Sam Mendes and Stephen Daldry were nominated for Best Director – Motion Picture, for Slumdog Millionaire [+see also:

respectively. The films were also nominated in the Best Feature – Drama category.

and Mamma Mia! were nominated in the Best Feature – Comedy category. While there were no British or Irish actors in the Actor – Drama category, Kristin Scott Thomas and Kate Winslet were nominated in the Actress – Drama category for I’ve Loved You So Long [+see also:

and Revolutionary Road respectively.

Irish actors Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson scored nominations in the Actor – Comedy Or Musical category for In Bruges, while Spanish actor Javier Bardem secured a nomination for Vicky Cristina Barcelona [+see also:

in the same category. In the Actress – Comedy Or Musical Category, British actresses Rebecca Hall, Sally Hawkins and Emma Thompson scored nominations for Vicky Cristina Barcelona, Happy-Go-Lucky and Last Chance Harvey respectively.

Ralph Fiennes was nominated for Supporting Actor for The Duchess [+see also:

while Kate Winslet and Spain’s Penelope Cruz were nominated in the Supporting Actress category for The Reader and Vicky Cristina Barcelona respectively.

British writers Simon Beaufoy, David Hare and Peter Morgan were nominated in the Screenplay category for Slumdog, The Reader and Frost/Nixon respectively.

UKFC Chairman Stuart Till said, “It's a terrific result for British films and talent right across the board and a ringing endorsement of the strength and skill of the British film industry.”
