Presentation & Philosophy

Film and TV School (FAMU) is an integral part of The Academy of Performing Arts, which was founded after World War II, in 194s. FAMU is the fifth oldest film school in the world. Its graduates include many influential filmmakers and scriptwriters, many known within international contexts such as Oscar winners or laureates of international film festivals. In addition, most people working in the Czech Republic’s film and TV industry in artistic or production positions, as well as still-photographers in various media are graduates from FAMU.

FAMU is divided into 11 departments: Directing, Documentary Film, Screenwriting and Script Editing, Animation Film, Cinematography, Sound Design, Film Editing, Producing, Photography and the interdisciplinary Center of Audiovisual Studies. FAMU International is a special department focused for teaching a wide range of film disciplines in English.

An integral part of the school is the FAMU Studio, providing complete professional facilities from HDV, digital Beta cam and HDTV to 16 and 35mm facilities for students´ work.

Programme objective and content:

FAMU provides a broad and thorough education that is based on both practical exercises and theoretical coursework, with the aim of training independent professional filmmakers who are progressive both technically and artistically in their respective crafts.

For decades FAMU has served as the national training ground for Czech filmmakers as well as an international centre for cultivating audiovisual talent from around the world.

Potential students wishing to study for a degree in English can enter the Cinema and Digital Media, Cinematography or Photography Programme. The three-year follow-up Master’s programme in Cinema and Digital Media very intensive hands-on and theoretical preparation from the very beginning, as the students learn how to work with a DVCam, HD and DigiBeta while adopting a professional approach to the 16mm and 35mm film formats both on location and in the studio, and taking a number of compulsory courses based on their specialisation, complemented with suitable optional subjects, workshops, and a number of ad-hoc modules – short intensive courses taught by guest professional artists, theorists, and visiting professors.

The two-year follow-up Master’s programme in Cinematography is designed to help students to perfect professional skills for a career as director of photography. Much of the instruction is carried out through one-on-one mentorship or classes limited to a maximum of 8 students. Students work with various media, with studio lighting and exercise exponometric and colorimetric skills. Exercises include 35mm production on Kodak Vision3. Students can choose to shoot their final degree project on 35mm or digital 4K camera, and are guided to leave the program with a professional level showreel in hand.

The Photography programme is designed in such a way to prepare independent creative individuals, for 3 years (6 semesters) in the Bachelor Programme, and for another 2 years (4 semesters) in the Master Programme. During the course of their studies, students gain increasingly greater freedom to choose the specific focus of their own creative work, both on the practical as well as theoretical levels. The practical part of the photography program develops both the creative talents as well as knowledge in the areas given by the focus of various Studios, which include traditional photography technique and processes as well as digital methods, employing the most up-to-date technology available. The Department of Photography offers to the students lecture rooms, 6 fully equipped studios, 5 darkrooms, computer rooms and high-tech equipment for printing and scanning and archive.  Students can borrow various devices and photo-equipment.

Additionally, it is also possible to apply for various Short Term Courses organized by most of the departments.

Entry requirements:

Each program offers various concentrations and each program requires different things to apply. The goal of entering procedure is to assure, that each student proofs individual talent and development potential as well as certain level of competencies, and on the other hand, that the program and concentrations fits to applicant´s expectations. This is also a basic prerequisite, that study group can gain an atmosphere of co-operation on practical works and sharing knowledge in each member´s talent development.

In general for most of programs at least one art work made by the applicant is required, as well as portfolio or written texts. In some cases (or usually second round of the application procedure) there is skype interview of the commission with the applicant.
