Arte France Cinéma’s (managed by Olivier Père) first selection committee of 2018 has decided to get involved in the co-production and pre-purchasing of four projects. Standing out among them is L’Adieu à la nuit, which will be the 26th feature by André Téchiné (selected six times in competition at Cannes, three times at Berlin and once at Venice) and which will star Catherine Deneuve (teaming up with the filmmaker for the eighth time), Switzerland’s Kacey Mottet Klein (a European Film Promotion Shooting Star in 2016, nominated for the César Award for Most Promising Actor in 2013 and 2017 for Sister [+lee también:

), the story (which is based on interviews conducted by international correspondent David Thomson with youngsters who joined ISIS) hinges on a question: what to do when the person whom you love the most becomes an enemy of the French Republic? This is the dilemma faced by Muriel (Deneuve) regarding her grandson, Alex (Mottet Klein). The film will be produced by Olivier Delbosc for Curiosa Films.

Arte France Cinéma has also selected Wild Goose Lake by China’s Diao Yi’nan (Golden Bear at Berlin in 2014 for Black Coal), which will be co-produced by Paris-based outfit Memento Films Production. Starring Hu Ge, Tang Wei, Liao Fan (who was crowned with the Best Actor Award at Berlin for Black Coal) and Kwei Lun-Mei, the film will tell the story of a thief at the centre of a manhunt and his desperate quest for redemption.

Arte France Cinéma will also be supporting the upcoming opus (which is as yet untitled and whose plot is shrouded in secrecy) by Gaspar Noé (I Stand Alone, Irréversible, Enter the Void [+lee también:

), co-produced with Rectangle Productions, Wild Bunch and Les cinémas de la Zone.

The fourth movie selected at this session is Le Traducteur, which will be the feature debut by Syrian directors Rana Kazkaz and Anas Khalaf. Backed by the Cannes Cinéfondation Atelier, this project, which sees Georges Films (France), Synéastes Films (Syria, Jordan), Manderley Films (Germany) and the Doha Film Institute partner up on production duties, took home the Arte International Prize from the Cannes Film Festival last year. Starring Ziad Bakri, the film’s story will unfold in March 2011, at the start of the Syrian Revolution. A translator who is a political refugee in Australia decides to return to Syria illegally and risk everything to free his brother, who has been arrested by the Assad regime.

As a reminder, Arte France Cinéma is supporting the upcoming films by Nuri Bilge Ceylan, Jia Zhangke, Alice Rohrwacher, Mia Hansen-Love, Kleber Mendonça Filho, Olivier Assayas, Pawel Pawlikowski, Philippe Faucon, Leos Carax, Corneliu Porumboiu, Nadav Lapid, Cédric Kahn, Claire Burger, Mati Diop, Arthur Harari, Mikhaël Hers, Emmanuel Mouret, Gustave Kervern and Benoît Delépine, Quentin Dupieux, Christophe Honoré, Benoît Jacquot, Rabah Ameur-Zaïmèche, Mohamed Ben Attia, Nicolas Pariser, Jean-Bernard Marlin, Jayro Bustamante, Hafsia Herzi, Dror Moreh, and duos Caroline Poggi and Jonathan Vinel, and Felipe Barbosa and Clara Linhart, in addition to animated films helmed by Florence Miailhe and Michel Ocelot.
