by Neil Beloufa are just a few recent examples that stand as a testament to the quality of the projects that have taken part in the FID Lab, the international co-production platform of the FIDMarseille (Marseille International Film Festival), which can now boast 63 completed films out of the 102 projects selected for the nine previous editions.

For its tenth anniversary, the professional event, which will unspool on 12 and 13 July as an integral part of the 29th edition of the southern French festival (10-16 July 2018), received 332 applications and has selected 12 titles (two at the writing stage, seven in development, one in production and two in post-production) involving ten countries.

Standing out among the movies in post-production is the fiction feature Suer d’intentions by France’s Chrystèle Nicot. The film, which is being staged by Hutong Productions and co-produced by Bad Manners, revolves around a group of six men and women, the last few representatives of their respective ethnic groups to have survived a climate disaster that has annihilated the planet. Stuck in Hong Kong, they are forced to find their soul mates within the group in order to ensure the continuation of the species. That is, until one of them mysteriously disappears…

Some of the titles in development are The River [+lee también:

), which will blend documentary and fiction as it depicts the life of a woman on the fringes of society during a hurricane in the Southern USA; the Austrian fiction production For Spring by French-British filmmaker Marine Hugonnier (portraying a war reporter who spends one afternoon and one night in the secret flat of an overthrown dictator); and the British fiction project Sebastiano Blu by Pauline Curnier Jardin (staged by Primitive Film), with a plot hinging on a handsome young man whose insatiable appetite for attention, obsessive thoughts and fears when it comes to women will drag him down a deadly rocky road.

An Austrian project at the writing stage has also been selected – namely, City of Falls by Georg Tiller (produced by Subobscura Films). In the film, which melds fiction and documentary, a daydreaming waitress and a shy croupier fall in love when they take part in a reconstruction of the 1812 war for the tourists at Niagara Falls. Some native demonstrations force them to choose between helping the Mohawk activists and bearing witness to a tragedy.

Lastly, we should highlight the Argentinian fiction project in development Pacú Boy by Manuela Gamboa, the US documentary in production The Village Detective by Bill Morrison, and the Brazilian title in post-production Tremor Iê by Lívia de Paiva and Elena Meirelles. The FID Lab’s 2018 selection is rounded off by a short film in development (Ceuta’s Gate by Randa Maroufi) and two medium-length films: the documentary in development A Treatise on Limnology by Dane Komljen and James Lattimer (produced by Germany’s Flaneur Films and Spain’s Andergraun Films), and the German project Inside Guillaume by Assaf Gruber, which is at the writing stage.
