Acclaimed Iranian filmmaker and recent Palme d’Or winner at the Cannes Film Festival (see the news) Jafar Panahi will lead a hands-on filmmaking workshop this summer in Italy. Taking place in the historic medieval town of Monte San Savino, near Arezzo in Tuscany, this unique programme offers a valuable opportunity for filmmakers from around the world to develop their craft in an inspiring and collaborative setting.

Le giornate del cinema of Monte San Savino is thus offering its second practical cinema workshop, having transformed this tiny medieval village into a real centre for creative experimentation. In November 2024, a group of emerging filmmakers participated in a similar experience led by Spanish helmer Víctor Erice, resulting in a series of thoughtful, visually striking short films. The event highlighted the power of combining artistic mentorship with a peaceful environment that fosters deep focus and personal exploration. Building on that success, the organisational team is hosting a new edition from 16-26 August 2025, with Panahi as the lead mentor.

Panahi is renowned for making bold, intimate films despite the strict limitations in his home country. His work often blends fiction and documentary, offering profound reflections on identity, freedom and everyday life. Throughout this ten-day workshop, Panahi will mentor 30 international participants in the creation of short films – from initial ideas and scriptwriting to shooting and editing. The name that has been given to this edition is “Cinema Will Always Speak”. The workshop will explore how to use cinema as a medium of expression, and how to confront restrictions and limitations, turning them into strengths, rather than obstacles.

The entire town of Monte San Savino will serve as a film set, encouraging participants to explore narrative, documentary and experimental forms in direct dialogue with the surrounding environment. The goal is not only to produce short films, but also to cultivate a space for meaningful observation, introspection and creative exchange.

Through a mix of group sessions, one-on-one mentorship and collaborative feedback, participants will be supported in pushing their cinematic language in new directions. The diversity of voices and approaches is key to the spirit of the project.

Applications are open until 25 June, and the selection process is open to filmmakers from all backgrounds and of all experience levels. Full details – including application guidelines, the programme schedule, fees, accommodation and the form to submit – are available on the official website.

Don’t miss this chance to take your filmmaking further and work under the guidance of one of today’s most courageous and inventive directors.
