synopsis

1915. The men are at the front, and the women must take on the role of guardians of the farms. A mother, Hortense, a tireless worker, hires Francine, a young orphan from the welfare services to support her, because her own daughter is reluctant to obey. Mutual respect and admiration flourish between Hortense and Francine. But to save the unity of her family, Hortense will have to sacrifice this girl, and pay the price.
