PLAYGROUND

by Bartosz M. Kowalski

synopsis

Three small-town 6th-graders, Gabrysia, Szymek and Czarek on the last day of school. We witness the early morning routine at their homes and observe them among classmates. Gabrysia decides to tell Szymek that she has fallen for him. She sets up a secret meeting in the park. Szymek shows up accompanied by Czarek, his best buddy. They make fun of the girl and leave to spend the rest of the day playing computer games as planned. At the shopping centre they find the game store closed. Instead of buying a new game, they kidnap a 3-year-old boy and take him to a far-off place where they commit a crime. This observational drama, based on true events, asks not only the obvious question “what lies behind such terrible acts committed by children” but also questions whether we are able to find such an answer at all.
