THE SKY, THE EARTH AND THE RAIN

by José Luis Torres Leiva

synopsis

A rugged, autumnal silence shrouds the lives of four dwellers of a small island in southern Chile. Ana works a small shop and looks after her bedridden mother. Her friend Verónica seems self-assured and independent. Marta is mentally ill and lives with her boxer brother. Through Verónica, Ana starts to do house work for Toro, a man who lives isolated by his own choice. The four of them share an imposing setting that smells of dry leaves and wet soil. Their lives take place as they walk around the countryside, share drives by car, and take the ferry connecting the island to the continent. Loneliness becomes another element in the landscape, as something human seems to appear when their paths meet.
