San Juan de Gaztelugatxe

Filming Europe Location Award

In the heart of the Bay of Biscay, stands a small chapel originating from the 10th century, built at the top of a rock that rises out of the sea. A narrow stone bridge, splashed by the waves, links this small islet to dry land, creating a magic space where it’s easy to imagine Game of Thrones’ characters going up the 241 steps sculpted in stone, which lead to San Juan de Gaztelugatxe. Nestled amongst the cliffs, the mountainsides and the caves surrounding the abbacy they’ve found a unique landscape, marked by over a thousand years of history and a future always waiting to be discovered. Its beauty is in its mystery.

Its walls have been a shelter to a convent of monks, a military fort and in the year 1596 to the famous pirate Sir Francis Drake which came ashore on its coasts, plundered its treasures.
