The discovery of the manuscript

Roberto Leggio found the manuscript in July of 2002, among the pages of Emile Zola’s Joy of Life, acquired at a Montecatini antiques stall.

The document was made up of forty pieces of cheap letter paper, preserved inside a deteriorated and completely anonymous ochre envelope. The handwriting is neat, the ink blue and heavy and faded in some passages. Some pages are missing; others have been carelessly torn out. Others still include striking designs.
