European Shooting Stars 2014

Each year, EFP selects the Shooting Stars, 10 of the most promising young actors from all over Europe, through a select jury of film industry professionals, because of the talent and potential the actors and actresses showcase in their performances. Cineuropa has met with each talent during the Berlinale, and interviewed them.

Danica Curcic - DENMARK

Danica Curcic graduated from the Danish National School of Theatre in 2012 and was immediately hired as a member of the Royal Danish Theatre. She followed this up with two highly acclaimed Swedish series: The Bridge and Wallander. On the feature film front, Danica is soon to be seen in the new Bille August family drama, Silent Heart (opposite several former Shooting Stars); as the female lead in Christian E. Christiansen's feature, On the Edge (Lev stærkt); and in Mikkel Nørgaard's highly anticipated film, The Absent One.

 

Maria Dragus - GERMANY

Maria Dragus, who trained as a classical dancer, came into the international spotlight with her supporting role in Michael Haneke’s award-winning drama The White Ribbon. For her performance in this film, she won the German Film Award in 2010 as Best Supporting Actress. This auspicious film debut was followed by roles in Andres Veiel's If Not Us, Who?, as the female lead in Emily Atef's Kill Me, and in Friederike Jehn’s Summer Outside, all of which have won her critical acclaim.

 

Miriam Karlkvist - ITALY

Miriam Karlkvist was born in Reggio Calabria in 1992. She is half Italian and half Swedish. Directly after completing her high school education she made her film debut as the featured actor in South is Nothing directed by Fabio Mollo. The film was invited to both the Toronto and Rome International Film Festivals and will now be screened at the 2014 Berlin International Film Festival in the Generation 14plus. Miriam currently lives in Rome where she is studying acting, writing and photography.

 

Marwan Kenzari - THE NETHERLANDS

Marwan Kenzari trained at the renowned Theater Academy Maastricht, and has had featured roles in many award winning plays. He made his screen debut in 2009 in Maite Was Here, followed by the lead in Alex van Warmerdam's The Last Days of Emma Blank. After winning acclaim in the heralded crime drama, Loft, Marwan collaborated with director Jim Taihattu on Rabat and Wolf - with a third film in development. Next up are three features: Streets of Hearts, The Disappearance of Vera Muller and Lucia de B.

 

Mateusz Kosciukewicz - POLAND

After studying drama in Krakow, Mateusz Kosciukewicz made his film debut in Peter Greenaway's Nightwatching. With his performance in Jacek Borcuch's All That I Love, Mateusz received the Polish Film Award as "Discovery of the Year". For his role in Mother Teresa of Cats, he won Poland's top award for upcoming talent, the Zbyszek Cybulski Award. His recent films include In the Name Of… and Walesa. Man of Hope (by Andrzej Wajda), and upcoming productions Elixer and 11 Minutes.

 

George Mackay - UNITED KINGDOM

George Mackay's career began at the age of 9 in the role of Cury in P J Hogan's Peter Pan. It continued to flourish in Scott Hicks' The Boys Are Back, with a British Independent Film nomination as 'Most Promising Newcomer' and as 'Young British Performer of The Year' at the Critics Circle Awards. October 2013 saw the release of 3 films starring George: How I Live Now, Sunshine on Leith, and For Those in Peril, for which he won a Scottish BAFTA at the 2013 awards. His most recent films include the lead role in Breakfast with Johnny Wilkinson, and the upcoming, Matthew Warchus’ Pride.

 

Edda Magnason - SWEDEN

Edda Magnason is a Swedish/Icelandic musician, songwriter, music producer and film actress. Her film debut is the leading role of Monica Zetterlund, the legendary Swedish jazz singer, in the film Waltz for Monica by Danish director Per Fly. In addition to her featured performance in the film, Edda also performed the repertoire of Zetterlund in the film. This follows the release of her two other albums, Edda Magnason (2010) and Goods (2011).

 

Jakob Oftebro - NORWAY

Jakob Oftebro is one of Scandinavia's most talented actors. His television work includes the BAFTA nominated Danish/Swedish TV series, The Bridge, as well as a featured role in the highly anticipated 1864 by Ole Bornedal. His film career includes roles in Max Manus – Man of War, and the Oscar and Golden Globe nominated Kon-Tiki, as well as leading roles in Victoria and The Hidden Child. In 2014, Jakob can be seen in Christian E. Christiansen's drama, On the Edge (Lev stærkt) and in In Order of Disappearance (Kraftidioten) by Hans Petter Moland.

 

Nikola Rakocevic - SERBIA

Nikola Rakocevic was trained in the theater where he has won critical acclaim and is a member of the Yugoslavian Drama Theater. His film debut was in 2005 in Stevan Filipovic’s Shetian’s Warrior, which was followed by Sinisa Kovacevic’s Sons of my Brothers, both of which won him substantial recognition. Nikola's roles in Stevan Filipovic’s Skinning brought him further acclaim, and in 2013 he was cast in Srdan Golubovic’s Circles which won awards at the Sundance and Berlin Film Festivals. The film is Serbia's official entry as Best Foreign Language Film for the Oscars.

 

Cosmina Stratan - ROMANIA

Cosmina Stratan was born in Iaşi, Romania, and came to acting following her studies in journalism and advertising. After graduating in acting from UNATC Bucharest, Cosima appeared in several short films and plays. In 2012, she was cast in Beyond the Hills, which marked her feature film debut. For her performance in this film, directed by Cristian Mungiu, she received the Best Actress Award at the 65th Cannes Film Festival. She is currently playing in an HBO series, Stay With Me.
