European Shooting Stars 2015

Each year, EFP selects the Shooting Stars, 10 of the most promising young actors from all over Europe, through a select jury of film industry professionals, because of the talent and potential the actors and actresses showcase in their performances. Cineuropa has met with each talent during the Berlinale, and interviewed them.

Aiste Diržiute - LITHUANIA

Aiste Diržiute is now in her final year of acting studies at the Lithuanian Music and Theatre Academy in Vilnius and she was already cast in small roles in TV series and commercials. Her first major film acting role was one of the two lead roles of Alante Kavaite's second feature, The Summer of Sangaile, which has been selected for the Panorama section at the 2015 Berlinale. Aiste has since appeared in front of the camera for Robert Mullan's We Will Sing about the 1991 revolution in Lithuania.

Moe Dunford - IRELAND

A graduate of the Gaiety School of Acting, Moe Dunford was nominated for the prestigious Bingham Ray New Talent Award at this year's Galway Film Fleadh for his portrayal of Patrick, a patient suffering from schizophrenia, in Terry McMahon's award-winning Patrick's Day. Apart from extensive stage work and appearances in such series as The Tudors and Game of Thrones, Moe has been cast in the recurring lead role of Aethelwulf in History Channel/MGM's international TV production Vikings.

Joachim Fjelstrup - DENMARK

Joachim Fjelstrup is one of European cinema's up an coming stars. He went straight from The Danish National School of Performing Arts in 2013, on to make his screen acting debut as the 1960's rock star Eik Skaløe in Ole Christian Madsen's romantic biopic Itsi Bitsi, which premiered in Toronto. He has since appeared opposite former Shooting Star Pilou Asbæk in Roni Ezra's Second World War drama April 9th as well as two graduation films from The National Film School of Denmark.

Hera Hilmar - ICELAND

Hera Hilmar's first major feature role was in Gudny Halldorsdottir's The Quiet Storm in 2007, she also featured in Runar Runarsson's 2 Birds in 2008, both films received awards and nominations. She graduated from London's LAMDA in 2011, and has since worked on projects as diverse as Joe Wright's Anna Karenina and Christopher Smith's Get Santa and she stars as Vanessa in David Goyer's highly acclaimed TV series Da Vinci's Demons. Hera received a Special mention at the 2014 Zurich Film Festival for her performance as the single mother Eik in Balvin Z's Life in a Fishbowl which has been selected as Iceland's Oscar submission for Best Foreign Language Film.

Abbey Hoes - THE NETHERLANDS

Abbey Hoes made her screen debut in 2009 as Maite in Boudewijn Koole's critically acclaimed Maite Was Here and was named one of the Most Promising Young Talents at the Dutch Film Festival in Utrecht in 2012. At last year's festival, she won a Golden Calf for Best Actress in a Feature Film for her starring role in Saskia Diesing's drama Nena, which has been selected for Generation 2015 section in the Berlinale. Abbey plays Maruschka Detmers' lead character Laura as a young woman in Nicole van Kilsdonk's Ventoux and will appear in Ineke Houtman's Escape with the late Rik Mayall.

Natalia de Molina - SPAIN

Natalia de Molina took Spanish cinema by storm with her first major film role in David Trueba's 2013 comedy drama Living is Easy With Eyes Closed. She received five prizes, including the 2014 Goya Award for Best New Actress, for her performance as the hitchhiker Belén. Natalia has since worked with Alfonso Albacete, Manuela Moreno and Mexico's Enrique Rivero, and is now in the lead of Juan Miguel del Castillo's debut Roof and Food, set against the background of the current economic crisis in Spain.

Jannis Niewöhnner - GERMANY

Jannis Niewöhner had his first acting role at the age of ten in a Tartot episode in 2002. He became known to a wider audience through his performance as the time-travelling Gideon de Villiers in the film version of Kerstin Gier's bestselling fantasy time-travel Ruby Red trilogy. In 2014, Jannis played a lead role in 4 Kings and made his international acting debut in Mika Kaurismäki's The Girl King.

Emmi Parviainen - FINLAND

Emmi Parviainen graduated from Helsinki's Theatre Academy with a Master's degree this year, but she can already look back on 20 years of acting for the stage, television and the cinema. Her breakthrough came with the role of the single mother Marja in Jan Forsström's debut film, The Princess of Egypt in 2013. Emmi is also one of the leads in Taru Mäkelä's comedy Eila, Rampe and the Baby Girl which has opened in Finnish cinemas in December 2014.

Sven Schelker - SWITZERLAND

A graduate of Munich's Otto Falckenberg School, Sven Schelker has been a member of Hamburg's Thalia Theatre acting ensemble since 2012. Whilst there, Sven played roles in Macbeth, Platonov and The Tragedy of Romeo & Juliet, among others. During his studies, Sven received the Migros Culture Percentage Acting Student Award in 2010 and 2011. He made his film acting debut in one of the leads - as Röbi Rapp - in Stefan Haupt's award-winning The Circle - Switzerland's entry for the Foreign Language Film Oscar.

Maisie Williams - UNITED KINGDOM

17-year-old Maisie Williams is best known for her role as Arya Stark in HBO's TV series Game of Thrones, which earned her two Portal Awards in 2012 for Best Supporting Actress and Best Young Actor in Television. She became the youngest actor to achieve this honour and was also named Best British Actor at the Radio 1 Teen Awards in 2013. In addition, Maisie has appeared in the independent films Heatstroke and Gold and was cast as one of the leads of Carol Morley's drama The Falling.
