Los motivos de Berta, his first feature, shot at only 22 years of age, participated in the Official Selection in competition at the Berlin Festival.

Later came Innisfree (1990) and Tren de sombras (1997), both presented at Cannes Festival. His next film, En construcción (Work in Progress, 2001), bagged the Special Jury Prize and the FIPRESCI Award at San Sebastian, in addition to the Premio Nacional de Cinematografía.

En la ciudad de Sylvia (2007) competed at Venice and Guest will be screened this year in the Orizzonti section at Venice and at Toronto.
