Cineuropa: What qualities should a documentary producer have these days?
Danuta Krasnohorska: I believe that the qualities of a good producer haven’t changed over the years despite the changing environment. For me, the bottom line is honesty and the skill to maintain an open dialogue. Most trainings concentrate on the technicalities of production – financing, marketing, legal aspects and so on. Of course, you need to know all that too. However, for me the crucial thing is to understand the creative idea that drives the author in order to be able to protect the integrity of the film until the end.
To what extent do you, as a producer, get involved in the creative process?
I like being involved from the very beginning – when the idea is born. It is important for me to understand the basic idea behind the film, the essence where it all comes from, so that later in development and production I can help the author not to lose the track. It is alchemy to find the right crew for a given project, and it is my job to create the right environment for the director to do the best job she or he can. Understanding what the first impulse for a film was helps me do this.
What projects do you have under way?
I have just finished a long take (shot in one take) short movie Hot and Cold directed by the young and very talented Polish director, Marta Prus. Currently we are closing financing of a documentary feature film called Love Express. The Strange Case of Walerian Borowczyk by Kuba Mikurda. It is a Polish-French co-production with HBO on board. The film is an account of a stormy relationship between erotic high art and censorship illustrated by the puzzling career of the Polish director, Walerian Borowczyk, who was celebrated in the ‘70s as an artist and damned in the ‘80s as a pornographer.
