The Odesa International Film Festival's Film Industry Office has revealed the awards handed out in the three competitive sections that took place last week.

The Pitching section presented 11 projects (one of which, Numbers, set to be directed by Oleh Sentsov, was out of competition) being produced or co-produced by Ukrainian companies and filmmakers, and the jury, comprising producer Johannes Rexin (RexinFilm, Germany), Marek Rozenbaum (Transfax Films, Israel), Guillaume de Seille (Arizona Productions, France), Riina Sildos (Amrion, Estonia), Gyda Myklebust (New Nordic Films, Norway) and Elma Tataragić (Sarajevo Film Festival), decided that the most deserving title was Inconvenient Memory by director Ihor Ivanko. It thus received the prize worth circa €2,000 (UAH 60,000).

Produced by Kyiv-based company Babylon13, Inconvenient Memory is a documentary in which the filmmaker discovers the secret archive owned by his grandfather, a famous Soviet cinematographer, who is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. Tracing the stories of his grandpa's youth back through half-damaged pictures, Ihor begins to recognise more of his grandpa’s heritage in himself. However, grandpa will soon not be able to recognise Ihor.

by Antonio Lukich. This drama-comedy, co-written by Lukich and Valeria Kalchenko, tells the story of a sound recordist and composer, two-metre-tall Vadim, who, after a number of setbacks in his personal and professional life, gets to record the sounds of Transcarpathian animals as a chance for him to move to Canada. But things get complicated when his mother becomes his companion on this task. The film is a production by Kyiv-based Toy Cinema.

The jury for Work in Progress consisted of Keiko Funato (Alpha Violet, France), Marcin Luczaj (New Europe Film Sales, Poland), Tiina Lokk (Tallinn Black Nights IFF, Estonia), Heino Deckert (ma.ja.de. Filmproduktions GmbH, Germany), Geremia Biagiotti (TVCO, Italy) and Zsuzsi Bankuti (The Match Factory, Germany).

Finally, at the ScripTeast session, six TV drama series were presented, and the Croatian project Family Archive by Marijan Alčevski and Andamion Murataj received the award consisting of post-production services, worth $20,000, from Star Media Company. Produced by Zagreb-based Corvus Film, the series follows a businesswoman running for office. Facing tough opposition from the conservative right-wing party, she endures all the blows, before some mysterious information about her ex-political prisoner father threatens not only her campaign but also the foundations of her own family.

A Special Award from Series Mania went to Smokey Eyes by Poland's Małgorzata Piłacińska, and it consists of an invitation to the 2019 Series Mania Writers Campus. The story is about five female friends in their forties who are trapped in a house in the mountains. While waiting for the fog to lift, they are struggling to recall what happened the previous, eventful night. When the idea that they died ceases to be so ridiculous, they will do anything to return to the reality from which they had wanted to escape so often.

The jury for the ScripTeast pitching session consisted of Laurence Herszberg (Series Mania Festival, France), Vlad Ryashin (Star Media), Dariusz Jablonski (Independent Film Foundation, Poland), Meinolf Zurhorst (ZDF/Arte, Germany), Klaus Zimmerman (Dynamic Television, Germany) and Brigitta Manthey (Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg, Germany).
