Benedek Fliegauf is making Fairy Ring

by

The Hungarian director Benedek Fliegauf, whose first feature (Forest) was not left unnoticed, and whose second film (Dealer) earned him many awards all over the world, is about to explore another genre, that of fantastic cinema, with his new project, Fairy Ring (Tündérkör). Like his previous works, this film is produced by Inforg Studio. At the moment, the cast and the setting are still being determined, although the American actor Harry Dean Stanton has already been chosen to play one of the main characters. The production is currently negotiating to have Beth Gibbons, the famous singer from Portishead, write the music. As far as the plot is concerned, Fairy Ring depicts the adventures of a young boy lost in a world of dreams based on the typical symbols of the European faitytale tradition : dark woods, small houses and lakes... With such a setting, the director hopes to ‘make a film like a Sophocles tragedy told by the Grimm brothers.’

When interviewed by Cineuropa, Benedek Fliegauf (born in Budapest in 1974), insisted that he had undertaken this project with the ambition to film a ‘quality ‘A’-category fantasy story, something which would seem real yet original,’ adding that ‘this genre is missing from the European film history.’ The director also revealed that the film should be mainly set in Transylvania and should start shooting at the end of the year. Fliegauf admits to feel optimistic concerning the success of this film, for this is the impression he got at the latest Berlinale Co-Production Market (which gathered producers, distributors, TV broadcasters, and sales companies from all over the world). As the director reveals, ‘many companies got in touch with us, from the tiniest danish company to Paramount Classic. The reason why the response is so positive is that this is a mainstream film with an original plot, without boring social stuff.’
