CANNES 2006 Directors’ Fortnight

European titles out in force, again

With 13 productions and two co-productions of the 22 features selected, European titles have the lion’s share of the 38th Director’s Fortnight (May 18-28), unveiled this afternoon in Paris. The selection committee, headed by the Cannes sidebar’s artistic director Olivier Père, has continued the positive trend of selecting mainly European titles, which are also plentiful in the Official Selection of the 59th Cannes Film Festival and the International Critics’ Week.

The Directors’ Fortnight 2006 programme includes only two features from Asia, one from Australia and no films from South America or Africa. With five films (one of which was made by French music group Daft Punk), only US titles can compete with Europe’s impressive portfolio, which includes six French titles: animated film Azur et Asmar by Michel Ocelot, Dans Paris [+see also:

will close the section and US film Day Night Day Night was co-produced by Germany’s ZDF and France’s Arte.

Lastly, three special screenings have been added to the programme, including Melvil by France’s Melvil Poupaud and the Argentinean/French/Dutch co-production Fantasma by Lisandro Alonso.
