PRODUCTION Italy

Faenza and I Viceré

by

One of the most highly anticipated films of next season is a production experiment: I Viceré (lit. “The Viceroys”), which Roberto Faenza has been shooting since last July, will be released theatrically, followed by a longer version to be broadcast in two parts on RAI Uno.

Produced by Elda Ferri for Jean Vigo and Spain’s I.C.C S.A. in collaboration with RAI Cinema and RAI Fiction, the film is based on the great eponymous novel by Federico De Roberto, set in the mid-1800s during the final years of Bourbon rule in Sicily, on the eve of the birth of the Italian nation. The characters Consalvo and Teresa are played by Alessandro Preziosi and Cristina Capotondi, a young actress much sought-after following the success of Notte prima degli esami (lit. “Night Before the Exams), who in I viceré sacrifices herself for the country.

The "world apart", which consisted of luxury, privilege and corruption, of the noble Uzeda di Francalanza family of Catania, descendents of the Viceroy of Spain, was adapted from the book by Faenza, Filippo Gentili, Andrea Porporati and Francesco Bruni, with Sandro Bonella serving as historical consultant.

The film has two main locations: Catania and the Chigi di Ariccia Palace, the Baroque villa outside of Rome used by Luchino Visconti for several scenes of The Leopard. The accurately reconstructed costumes were designed by Oscar winner Milena Canonero (Barry Lyndon, Chariots of Fire ). Francesco Frigeri is the film’s Production Designer and Maurizio Calvesi, DoP.
