Gonzalo Suárez boards Oviedo Express

by

Next Monday, October 30, the Asturias region will host the first day of shooting of Gonzalo Suárez's new project Oviedo Express, an ensemble film scheduled to be released in spring 2007.

Produced by Gona on a €4.5m budget, in collaboration with Asturian public entities, the film stars Aitana Sánchez Gijón, Carmelo Gómez, Bárbara Goenaga, Maribel Verdú, Jorge Sanz and Najwa Nimri in a story about a phantasmagorical train, the Oviedo Express, that arrives in town one night bringing a group of actors who will perform the theatrical adaptation of La Regenta, Leopoldo Alas Clarín's classic novel on life in Oviedo, dating back to 1885.

In the script, however, the book’s events come to life and touch the lives of the locals, uncovering hidden secrets and wreaking havoc all around.

This is not the first time that the veteran filmmaker is turning to the novel for inspiration. In 1974, he directed La Regenta, an integral adaptation of the work set in Oviedo in the late 19th century.
