Xawery Zulawski shoots adaptation of White and Red

by

White and Red – the famous novel by young writer Dorota Maslowska (winner of the prestigious literary awards Polityka Passport 2002 and Nike 2006) – has been adapted for the big screen. It is currently being shot by Xawery Zulawski (Chaos [+see also:

– Best Debut Film at the Gdynia Polish Film Festival in 2006).

Praised by critics for its unique power of observation, its innovative style and the freshness of its language, Maslowska’s novel depicts the desperate lives of youngsters in the dreary reality of a small town. This is a subject close to the heart of Zulawski, who centred Chaos on the same young people who have unstable and indefinite values, are incapable of communicating and seek refuge in discos, alcohol and drugs.

There have already been two attempts at adapting Maslowska’s book. Wiktor Grodecki (director of Insatiability, an adaptation of Stanislaw Ignacy Witkiewicz’s novel) in the end abandoned the project, even though production was set to start in March 2006.

Then Jan Jakub Kolski (Jasminum and Pornography [+see also:

) became interested in the project and put together a cast that included the young and talented actor Eryk Lubos. But Kolski was already working on two other films: Venice (an adaptation of three short stories by Wlodzimierz Odojewski) and Afonia i pszczoly (Afonia and the Bees – see news), which has just started shooting.

After Kolski’s withdrawal, Zulawski set to work on La guerre polono-russe sous une bannière rouge et blanche (“The Polish-Russian War Under A Red and White Banner”), casting Borys Szyc – the star of a TV action series – in the lead. The cast also includes popular Polish actress Sonia Bohosiewicz.

The film is produced by Film Media on a budget of €1.1m, half of which has been provided by the Polish Film Institute (PISF). Shooting is set to wrap up on June 17 and the title will be released in November.
