Manchevski takes Mothers to Toronto

by

Mothers, the new film by celebrated Macedonian director Milcho Manchevski, will have its world premiere in the Special Presentations section of the Toronto International Film Festival.

Mothers consists of three stories, which is a structure Manchevski employed in his debut film Before the Rain, winner of the Golden Lion in Venice in 1994. Described by some early viewers as experimental, the film is composed of two fictional and one documentary episode.

The first story focuses on a child who reports to the police the supposed “flashing” of a schoolmate by a man she never saw. The second episode follows a film crew in search of old rural traditions and concerns two old peasants, the only inhabitants of a deserted village. The third story is the documentary and chronicles the shocking deaths of a number of middle-aged mothers killed by a psychopath.

“The film is about all kinds of mothers – present, absent, dedicated, neglectful, loving,” says Manchevski. “It is a film about the society, but I am more interested in individuals. It is about Macedonia, but also about every other society because people are the same everywhere. Actually, it’s more a film from Macedonia than about Macedonia.”

Shot in urban, rural and uninhabited parts of the country, Mothers was co-produced by Banana Film (Macedonia), Ciné Sud Promotion (France) and Elements Film (Bulgaria), with funding from the Macedonian Film Fund, the Bulgarian National Film Centre, the Fonds Sud Cinéma and the French Film Center (CNC). International sales are handled by Paris-based Rendez-vous Pictures.
