Scripted by Sciamma herself (who has also co-written Ivory Tower by Canadian musician Chilly Gonzales, recently unveiled at Locarno), the storyline of Tomboy is centred around Laure, 10 years old, who has everything of a tomboy. She has just moved to a new place with her parents and her little sister Jeanne. It's the summer and all other kids of the neighborhood are playing together, but Laure doesn't know anyone yet. When she meets Lisa, a girl around the same age as her, she lets her think she's a boy. Laure becomes Mickaël, and starts to play with the other kids. Slowly she becomes really close to Lisa which complicates the ambiguity of her position..

Produced by Bénédicte Couvreur (producer of Sciamma’s debut feature) for Hold Up Films & Productions, Tomboy has received pre-sales funding from Canal + to date, while backing from Sofica Arte Cofinova 6 is still being finalised, especially with regard to French distribution. "We had the perfect cast at the end of May so we decided to start filming right away," the producer told Cineuropa. "The film is set to open in the first half of 2011.”
