Greek filmmaker Costas Zapas (pictured) announced at the Sundance Film Festival the start of pre-production of his English-language adaptation of Frankenstein: A Death Odyssey, based on Mary Shelley’s novel Frankenstein.

The feature film will be shot in locations in Greece and Europe.

The project was presented at the Toronto VIP co-production event Producers Lab Toronto, as part of a selection of the 12 best European projects in 2011.

The story follows a theatre troupe who arrives in a city to perform Frankenstein, where they meet a young female reporter, who is investigating the legend and who believes that the novel is not fiction, but rather the true story of a group of intellectuals and alchemists founded by the young doctor Victor Frankenstein, who managed in 1817 to defeat mortality and return from the dead. Interviewing the theatre troupe members, the reporter is confronted with the dark heroes of the novel.
