Last week (3 September), Norwegian director Joachim Trier started principal photography in New York for his first English-language film, the family drama Louder than Bombs [+see also:

– almost a year after the production was “postponed indefinitely”, when the €6.4 million funding fell through.

French actress Isabelle Huppert, Irish actor Gabriel Byrne and US actor Jesse Eisenberg are still playing the leads, and have been joined in the cast by Americans Amy Ryan, David Strathairn and Devin McKenzie Druid. Also, cinematographer Jakob Ihre is back on the eight-week New York shoot.

in 2011 together), Louder than Bombs is the story of a famous war photographer (Huppert) who is killed in a car accident, leaving behind her husband (Byrne) and two sons, one a teenager. Three years after her death, the eldest son (Eisenberg) comes home for an exhibition of her photography – and that is when they discover an unsettling secret from her past.

Now a Norwegian-French-Danish co-production, it is being staged by Norwegian producer Thomas Robsahm, of Motlys, and French producer Alexandre Mallet-Guy, of Memento Films, with Denmark’s Nimbus Film, and US companies Animal Kingdom, Beachside Film and Bona Fide. Sweden’s Svensk Filmindustri holds the Norwegian and Danish rights, while TriArt is handling theatrical distribution in Sweden. Memento Films will distribute in France, and its international sales division has already licensed it to the Benelux, Israel, the former Yugoslavia, Turkey, Taiwan and the Middle East.
