film profile] having just had its world premiere at Toronto, Hungarian cinema will now continue full steam ahead with its impressive 2014 at the 62nd San Sebastián Film Festival, which gets under way tomorrow. The festival’s competitive New Directors section will be presenting the feature debut by Marcell Gerö: the documentary Cain's Children [+see also:

The film follows the fates of Pal, Zsolt and Gabor, three men who spent their teenage years together in the Tokol juvenile detention centre in the 1980s. Pal killed his father, Zsolt murdered one of his friends, while Gabor killed his teacher. At the time, a filmmaker recorded their distressing testimonies, but this subversive material was banned. When Marcell Gerö discovered it, he decided to set off in search of these three youths and to retread with them the paths that their lives followed. Three fates that are pieced together in all their violence, three singular stories that end up tracing the outline of a country that swings between one era and another, a modern-day political and social context in which the powers that be only wish to be rid of these marginalised individuals who are getting in their way.
Cain’s Children was produced by Hungarian outfit Campfilm Production (Sara Laszlo), and French firms JBA Production (Marianne Dumoulin and Jacques Bidou) and Arte France. The film also received backing from HBO Europe, Media Development - EACEA, Cosip, Procirep/Angoa, Radio Télévision Suisse and the Hungarian Tax Incentive.
