The Seville European Film Festival comes to a close today, Saturday 15, after eight days of events and screenings of the best European films of the year. The jury, composed of Spanish filmmaker Carlos Vermut, Turkish filmmaker Pelin Esmer, Spanish actress Nora Navas, Argentinean programmer Marcelo Panozzo and English film critic Neil Young, has decided to award the Golden Giraldillo for Best Film to Ruben Östlund's excellent Force Majeure [+see also:

film profile]. The film, which was already awarded in Cannes' Un Certain Regard, skillfully depicts the emotional aftermath of a Swedish family in a French ski resort. According to the jury, “no-madeja-do (“it has not abandoned me”) is the motto of Seville – so there can be no more appropriate winner of the top prize than a work which hinges on the idea of abandonment, in which the perception of crisis triggers an unexpected response with extreme consequences for all concerned.” Additionally, the film received the Best Screenplay Award, also for Östlund.
