SF Kino opens Norway’s largest IMAX multiplex in Oslo

Already operating theatres in Bergen, Stavanger/Sandnes and six other cities in Norway, Norwegian exhibitor SF Kino – part of Nordic Cinema Group, which owns 65 theatres (totalling 64,000 seats) in 80 Nordic and Baltic cities, and is controlled by Sweden’s Bonnier Group – will open Norway’s largest multiplex in Oslo in late 2017.

A joint venture by SF Kino, IMAX and Olav Thon Properties will bring the centre to fruition; the cinema will boast 11 screening rooms – with approximately 2,000 seats – and will be located in the Storo shopping mall in Oslo. One of the auditoria will be Norway’s first digital IMAX theatre, with the largest screen in Scandinavia.

“We want to be in neighbourhoods where people live, and Storo is such a centre, with hotels, cafés, shops and educational institutions – a large part of Oslo will see it as their local cinema,” said Ivar Halstvedt, CEO of SF Kino, which recently took over the Ski cinema centre and is currently building a new theatre at Sotra, outside Bergen.

“We are confident that Norwegian audiences will embrace IMAX as their preferred way to experience the biggest blockbuster films,” said Andrew Cripps, EMEA president at IMAX, which will be equipping the IMAX theatre with a screen the size of a three-storey building, its new projection system and digital video.

The largest exhibitor in the Nordic and Baltic countries, Nordic Cinema Group operates theatres under four different brands in six markets – SF Kino in Norway, SF Bio in Sweden, Finnkino in Finland, and Forum Cinemas in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania – and co-owns another 43 cinemas. The company is based in Stockholm and has Jan Bernhardsson as its president and CEO.
