The ICA supports new films by Vasconcelos and Pêra

Directors António-Pedro Vasconcelos and Edgar Pêra will receive €600,000 each from Portugal’s national film body, the ICA, to produce their upcoming film projects, Morrer por Amor [+see also:

Vasconcelos – whose latest film, Os gatos não têm vertigens [+see also:

, was the big winner at the 2015 Sophia Awards (read more) – is expected to begin principal photography for his new work, provisionally entitled Morrer por Amor (lit. “To Die out of Love”), in May. Tino Navarro’s MGN is producing the movie, which is based on a plot developed by Vasconcelos’ regular scriptwriter, Tiago R Santos. The casting process is currently being finalised.

Pêra’s Caminhos magnéticos (lit. “Magnetic Paths”), produced by Rodrigo AreiasBando à Parte, is based on two short stories by Branquinho da Fonseca – an author Pêra had already adapted in his 2011 film O Barão. The movie, billed as a “post-apocalyptic story”, will not be shot until 2016. Until then, Pêra still has to wrap the edit of a “burlesque, trans-realistic” feature entitled Adeus Carne.

Outside of the sphere of ICA support, there was also a third project announced last week: a film based on the life of late Portuguese poet Al Berto, to be directed by Vicente Alves do Ó (Florbela [+see also:

). Currently in development, this Ukbar production has been allocated €10,000 by the City Hall of Sines – a southern town where the poet spent part of his childhood and adolescence, and where, after being exiled in Belgium, he returned to write his first poetry book. Principal photography is expected to kick off in 2016.
