Written by Frédéric Jardin, Fabrice Roger-Lacan and Nicolas Benamou, the story kicks off on the first day of the summer break, with a family piling into their brand-new people carrier in the early hours of the morning in order to avoid the traffic jams. Tom, the father, is at the wheel, next to his wife, Julia, who is eight months pregnant. Behind them are their nine-year-old daughter and her younger, seven-year-old brother. Even further back is Tom’s father, Ben, who unexpectedly took it upon himself to join them, much to Julia’s dismay, as she had planned to spend a little time together as a family for once, without her father-in-law being involved. To make matters worse, Ben secretly manages to smuggle a pretty young girl on board, who had been abandoned at a petrol station. Tom switches on his electronic cruise control and sets it at 80 miles an hour. Just as a final faux pas by Ben pushes an exasperated Julia over the edge, forcing her to demand that they turn around, Tom realises that he is no longer in control of his vehicle. The car’s electronics are not responding any more, and the speed setting is stuck at 80 miles an hour. Nothing he tries to slow the runaway car down seems to have any effect: the brake pedal, the clutch, the complex electronic commands that had previously made Tom so proud – nothing responds any more… The comforting haven of the people carrier has turned into an out-of-control hot rod that is forced to weave in and out of other cars and huge lorries. A crazy car, six passengers on the verge of a nervous breakdown and a huge traffic jam lying in wait for them less than 125 miles up the road. It’s 10 am on 1 July…

Produced by Marco Cherqui for Chic Films and by Thomas Langmann for La Petite Reine Production, with Lauranne Bourrachot (Chic Films) and Emmanuel Montamat (La Petite Reine) acting as associate producers, A fond is co-produced by M6 Films and Wild Bunch. Having been pre-purchased by Canal+, Ciné+ and W9, the feature is also being supported by the Palatine Etoile 13 and SofiTVCiné 3 Soficas. The planned nine- or ten-week shoot will take place in Paris and the Ile-de-France region, as well as in Macedonia. Distribution in French theatres will be handled by Wild Bunch, which is also in charge of the international sales, together with Other Angle Pictures.
