(which was unveiled at Toronto).

Written by the director, the story of Frantz kicks off in a small town in Germany, shortly after World War One. Every day, Anna goes to reflect and pay her respects at the grave of her fiancé, Franz, who was killed in France. One day, Adrien, a mysterious young Frenchman, also comes to lay flowers on the grave, and his presence will soon spark unpredictable reactions in an environment that bears the scars of Germany’s defeat...

Produced by Éric and Nicolas Altmayer for Mandarin Cinéma (which is partnering with Ozon for the fifth film in a row), Frantz is co-produced by Berlin-based outfit X Filme Creative Pool (Stefan Arndt and Uwe Schott). The feature has received support to the tune of €160,000 through the Franco-German co-production Mini-Traité. The shoot, which got under way in Saxony, Germany, and should head to France (specifically the Limousin region) some time in September, will wrap on 17 October. Distribution in France is apparently being handled by Mars, and the rest of the film’s partners will be revealed at a later date.
