Michaël R Roskam is upping expectations surrounding his next film even further by enlisting the talents of Adèle Exarchopoulos, Abdellatif Kechiche’s unforgettable Adèle. Le Fidèle (lit. “The Believer”) has a decidedly Cannes-esque whiff to it when we also take into account the fact that the actress from the Palme d’Or-winning title will be rubbing shoulders with Matthias Schoenaerts, who rose to international stardom in Rust & Bone [+see also:

(another of Audiard’s titles). Are we to see this as some kind of filiation, or a stylistic link to the world of the French director?

Not a great deal is known about the plot of Le Fidèle, apart from the fact that it is a love story set against a film-noir backdrop, all revolving around the world of crime in Brussels. (shot in Flemish) was lured away to partake in a US adventure when he filmed The Drop two years ago, which starred Tom Hardy, Noomi Rapace, the late James Gandolfini and Matthias Schoenaerts.

The Flemish actor is the common thread throughout Roskam’s three films; furthermore, the filmmaker is partnering up again with Bart Van Langendonck, of Savage Films, the producer of Bullhead. Incidentally, Savage Films boasts a very busy agenda at the moment. The company is currently presenting The Ardennes, the debut film by Robin Pront (which, by the way, Roskam had considered directing at one point), at Toronto and has just brought out Galloping Mind in Belgium, another feature debut by dancer and choreographer Wim Vandekeybus.

Le Fidèle is being co-produced in France by Pierre-Ange Le Pogam and Stone Angels (Grace of Monaco [+see also:

). International sales will be handled by Wild Bunch, and the film will be distributed in France by Pathé. The shoot is due to kick off at the start of next year, and Le Fidèle already promises to be one of the Flemish event movies set to land in the near future.
