László Nemes has made both a feature debut and masterstroke, as last night he became the first Hungarian filmmaker to feature on the list of winners at the Golden Globes when he won the Best Foreign-language Film Award with the movie. A gripping and highly accomplished work in terms of both its content (the day-to-day life of the Sonderkommandos in Auschwitz) and its style (via its immersive approach), Son of Saul was revealed at Cannes, where it won the Grand Prix to boot. Produced by Gábor Sipos and Gábor Rajna for Laokoon Filmgroup, with backing from such sources as the Hungarian Film Fund, the Cannes Festival’s Cinéfondation Residence, Sarajevo Cinelink and the Jerusalem Film Lab, the feature has been sold all around the world by French sales agent Films Distribution. It will be released in Spain next Friday (courtesy of Avalon Distribución Audiovisual), Italy on 21 January (Teodora Film), Poland on 22 January (Gutek Film), Sweden on 12 February (Studio S Entertainment), the Czech Republic on 18 February (Film Europe), Norway on 19 February (Arthaus), Denmark on 25 February (Camera Film) and the United Kingdom on 29 April (Curzon Artificial Eye).
