film profile] (lit. “The Children of the Night”), the feature debut by Andrea De Sica, who kicked off the shoot on 7 March in Toblach, South Tyrol.
Andrea – the grandson of the great Vittorio De Sica and the son of Manuel, a musician who specialised in composing soundtracks – has worked alongside Bernardo Bertolucci, Ferzan Ozpetek and Vincenzo Marra since his training at the Experimental Film Centre in Rome.

film profile] by Laura Bispuri), together with Rai Cinema, in co-production with Belgian outfit Tarantula and with contributions from the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Eurimages, and backing from the IDM – South Tyrol Film Fund & Commission.
The movie tells the story of Giulio (Vincenzo Crea), a 17-year-old boy who successfully manages to survive the solitude and harsh disciplinary environment of a boarding school for upper-class children thanks to his friendship with Edoardo (Ludovico Succio), another resident at the school. Soon they are joined at the hip and begin to plan nocturnal getaways from the prison-like institution. The main cast members are rounded off by Fabrizio Rongione in the role of teacher Mathias and Yuliia Sobol.
The location that the producers chose for the shoot is the Grand Hotel Dobbiaco, an old building in a style similar to the House of Habsburg, which began life as a hotel in 1878 and today serves as a Cultural Centre. The four-week shoot will take place entirely in South Tyrol.
Based on an original idea by Andrea De Sica, I figli della notte was written by the director himself together with Mariano Di Nardo, and with the involvement of Gloria Malatesta; the DoP is Stefano Falivene, while the production design has been entrusted to Dimitri Capuani, the wardrobe to Sabine Zappitelli and the editing to Alberto Masi.
