The Lumière Award aims to celebrate a personality from the seventh art at the very place where the cinematograph was invented by Louis and Auguste Lumière, and where they shot their first film, Workers Leaving the Lumière Factory (1895). This year, the prize created by Thierry Frémaux (managing director of the Lumière Institute and also famously the General Delegate of the Cannes Film Festival) and Bertrand Tavernier (president of the Lumière Institute) will be awarded to Catherine Deneuve at the eighth Lumière Festival, which will unspool in Lyon from 8-16 October 2016. The French actress therefore joins the ranks of a fine-looking winners’ list, as her predecessors are Martin Scorsese, Pedro Almodóvar, Quentin Tarantino, Ken Loach, Gérard Depardieu, Milos Forman and Clint Eastwood.
Standing out among the myriad other teasers from the programme for the 2016 edition (which will be unveiled in its entirety in September) are Marcel Carné, Buster Keaton, Universal Monsters and "La Cité des femmes" (Hollywood actresses from 1930-1950) retrospectives, an homage to late US novelist Jim Harrison, a focus on director Dorothy Arzner, and the announcement that Chinese actress Gong Li and US filmmaker Walter Hill will be present at Lyon, among a plethora of other guests. Also of note is the fourth edition of the Classic Film Market, which takes place from 12-14 October.
