film profile] by Dutch director Paul Verhoeven has now been chosen from among the four shortlisted titles (read the news) to represent France in the race for the upcoming Oscar for Best Foreign-language Film (which is to be given out on 26 February 2017, following the final selection of nominees on 24 January).
Starring such names as Isabelle Huppert, Laurent Lafitte, Virginie Efira, Anne Consigny and Vimala Pons, the film is an adaptation by David Birke of the novel Oh... by Philippe Djian. Produced by Saïd Ben Saïd for SBS Films, the feature was co-produced by France 2 Cinéma, German outfit Twenty Twenty Vision and Belgium’s Entre Chien et Loup; it was pre-purchased by Canal+ and OCS, and received backing from the CNC’s advance on receipts and the support of the French-German mini co-production treaty. Distributed in France by SBS (which is also in charge of its international sales), Elle has so far racked up 555,000 admissions in the country. The movie will be released in US theatres on 11 November by Sony Pictures Classics.
As a reminder, 78-year-old Verhoeven was nominated for the Oscar for Best Foreign-language Film with Turkish Delight in 1974, representing the Netherlands, and his US films (RoboCop, Total Recall, Basic Instinct, Starship Troopers and Hollow Man) have notched up eight Oscar nods (in the sound, editing, music, visual effects and sound editing categories).
