The film is an adaptation of John le Carre’s bestselling novel that follows recently retired MI6 agent George Smiley trying to adjust to a life outside the secret service. However, when a disgraced agent reappears with some startling information, Smiley is forced back into espionage.

The screenplay is by Peter Straughan (How To Lose Friends & Alienate People [+see also:

Gary Oldman stars as George Smiley, a role that Alec Guinness made his own in the 1979 BBC adaptation. The film also stars Colin Firth (The King's Speech [+see also:

Director of photography is Hoyte van Hoytema, and the editor is Dino Jonsäter, both of whom worked on Let the Right One In. Other members of the creative team include the production designer Maria Djurkovic, costume designer Jacqueline Durran, and hair and make-up designer Felicity Bowring.

Tim Bevan, Eric Fellner and Robyn Slovo are producing, with Alexandra Ferguson as co-producer and Liza Chasin, Debra Hayward, John le Carre, Peter Morgan and Douglas Urbanski serving as executive producers.

The film is a Working Title and StudioCanal production.
