Dumont and Resnais supported by Ile-de-France

At its fourth and final annual session, the Ile-de-France regional funding body for the film and audiovisual industries will announce €3.99m in funding today.

The list of projects supported includes Bruno Dumont’s Hadewijch, which has been granted €300,000. Produced by 3B Productions for €3.4m, including additional support from Arte France Cinéma, the film, whose 46-day shoot will get underway in February, retraces the experiences of Céline, a 25 year-old religious believer who is forced to leave a Flanders convent because she is deemed too confused and fanatical in her love of Christ.

Having returned to her studies and her middle-class Parisian family, the romantic, disenchanted and stoical young woman then strikes up a friendship with Khaled, who leads her astray into a life of petty crime. The story is based on the life of the Flemish poet and mystic Hadewijch (first half of 18th century) and will star Julie Sokolowski and Yassine Salime.

Ile-de-France has also decided to support Alain Resnais L’incident (“The Incident”, F comme Films, €11.1m) with the sum of €560,000. The feature – an adaptation by the director and Laurent Herbiet of Christian Gailly’s eponymous novel – will begin its 67-day shoot on January 14, 2008 at the Arpajon Studios, with a cast led by Sabine Azéma, André Dussollier, Emmanuelle Devos, Mathieu Amalric and Sandrine Bonnaire.

A sum of €520,000 has been allocated to Josiane Balasko’s Cliente (LGM, €9.5m, see article) starring Nathalie Baye, Eric Caravaca, Isabelle Carré and the director.

With a cast that includes Guillaume Canet, Géraldine Pailhas, and Hippolyte Girardot, Espions (“Spies”) by Nicolas Saada (The film, €7.2m) is set to receive €360,000, while the political thriller Une affaire d’état (“A State Affair”) by Eric Valette (La chauve-souris, €5.2m budget) starring André Dussollier, Rachida Brakni, Thierry Frémont and Caroline Cellier has been allocated €400,000.

A film about events in Rwanda, Jean-Christophe Klotz’s Les zones turquoises (“The Turquoise Zones”, Les Films du Poisson, €3.1m), starring Jalil Lespert, Olivier Gourmet and Pierre Arditi, will receive €360,000 and begin shooting in January.

Lastly, the majority French co-production A b’a mey by Sarah Bouyain (production Athénaïse with the support of Burkina-Faso) starring Fatou Ndiaye, Acita Ouédraogo and Sandrine Bonnaire will be granted €300,000 in funding.
