The Blind Sunflowers vying for nomination

José Luis Cuerda's The Blind Sunflowers was chosen to represent Spain in the race for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar nomination, beating the other two shortlisted titles Seven Billiard Table by Gracia Querejeta and Sangre de mayo by José Luis Garci.
Based on a novel by Alberto Méndez, The Blind Sunflowers stars Maribel Verdú, Javier Cámara and young talent Raúl Arévalo (DarkBlueAlmostBlack [+see also:

film profile]) as three characters fighting against social, sexual and religious repression during Spain's civil war.
Produced by Sogecineand Produccions A Modiño, with the support of TVE, Canal + and Televisión de Galicia, the film was released on August 29 by Alta Films. According to ICAA data, it has garnered over 11,000 moviegoers and nearly €65,000 so far, a figure expected to rise thanks to the Oscar buzz.
The Academy will announce the five nominees on January 22 and the awards ceremony will be held February 22, 2009.
