Digital screening

by

For one week only, the “Le Reflet Médicis” cinema in Paris is screening a digital version of Alberto Lewin’s 1951 Technicolor masterpiece,Pandora.
Both for quality and commercial reasons it is virtually impossible for exhibitors to screen classics, but one solution could be to screen digital cassette versions of these films using the same format that is adopted for television. However it is likely that cinephiles will be dissatisfied with what they see because the compression of the original into the much smaller digital format causes unsteady and darker images, especially in nocturnal sequences. Despite the CST - Superior Technical Commission’s having approved this experiment, the issue of rights (is this a video or cinema screening?) remains unresolved by the Centre Nationale de la Cinématografie - CNC.
