RELEASES Netherlands

Local films storm box office

by

It is a busy month for local films at the Dutch box office, caused by the upcoming Netherlands Film Festival, which will kick off on September 23.

During and just after last year’s edition, too many Dutch films were released to capitalize on the publicity storm caused by the festival. But Dutch audiences clearly weren’t up for several local films released in the space of just a few weeks, so many films did poorly.

To avoid a similar fate this year, three films decided to open in the three weeks before the festival. On September 3, the ambitious literary adaptation Life in One Day [+see also:

Based on the bestselling conceptual novel by A.F.Th. van der Heijden, Life in One Day recounts the story of two young lovers (Matthijs van de Sande Bakhuyzen, Lois Dols de Jong) who live in a world where life only lasts a day and everything can only happen once. When they fall in love they realise they would like to continue their experience, so they try to find a way out of their world, which doesn’t exactly go as planned. The Independent Films release is currently still on 12 screens.

Last Conversation, the experimental feature debut by video artist Noud Heerkens (see interview), which premiered at the Rotterdam Film Festival in January, was finally released last week. The Filmmuseum release, which was shot entirely in one take and features star actress Johanna ter Steege, is still playing on three screens.

Last but not least, the latest film from veteran director Ben Sombogaart (Bride Flight [+see also:
